The direct answer
The 24-hour Lisboa Card is worth it only when two paid anchors are genuinely available.
Use it for a focused monument day that includes Jerónimos Monastery or Belém Tower plus another expensive included sight and several transit rides. Skip it for a transport-only day, a viewpoint-and-food itinerary, Monday closures or a plan that depends on Belém time slots you have not secured.
The official card bundles unlimited public transport with free or discounted admission for 24, 48 or 72 consecutive hours. That sounds easy to value. In 2026, it is not. The card is physical, an online order produces a voucher that must be exchanged, and the two Belém attractions most likely to make the arithmetic work require a card number before you can reserve their limited entry slots.

What does your card day actually contain?
Buy the 24-hour card
You have two substantial included paid sights, several transit rides and a route that fits inside one continuous 24-hour window. Confirm any required slots first.
Compare central staysThree realistic days, with the arithmetic exposed
The official full adult prices are currently €31 for 24 hours, €51 for 48 hours and €62 for 72 hours, valid through March 31, 2027. Lisbon Metro lists a 2026 Carris and Metro 24-hour transport ticket at €7.25, a single Carris and Metro ticket at €1.90 and Metro zapping at €1.72. A city pass should therefore justify roughly €23.75 in admission value before transport alone makes the 24-hour version competitive.
Day shape 01 · clear winner
Jerónimos, a second included anchor and real transit use
Verdict: buy when the slots and opening days are confirmed. This is the trip shape the card is designed to reward.
Day shape 02 · false economy
Alfama, viewpoints, lunch and one paid interior
Verdict: skip. The pass loses when the best version of the day is mostly outdoors and walkable.
Day shape 03 · weather dependent
A museum day during current renovations
Verdict: recalculate. Our Lisbon rainy-day guide offers stronger geographic backups.
The Belém booking problem changes the recommendation
The official shop says Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery require a date and time. It also says you must first exchange the voucher for the physical Lisboa Card, then use that card number to reserve from the cardholder allocation. Availability is subject to daily capacity.
| Step | What happens | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Buy | Online purchase produces a voucher | You do not yet have the physical card number |
| 2. Collect | Exchange at an Ask Me Lisboa desk | Desk hours and arrival timing now affect the plan |
| 3. Reserve | Use the card number for Belém slots | Popular times may already be unavailable |
| 4. Activate | First validation starts the consecutive clock | Do not activate the evening before the valuable day |
If Jerónimos is the emotional center of the trip, access matters more than pass optimization. A separate timed ticket can be the better purchase when it secures the right day in advance. Saving a modest amount on paper is not useful if the main sight disappears from the route.
The card rule
Count only open attractions you would visit without a pass, at times you can actually reserve. Everything else is marketing inventory, not savings.
The simpler alternatives
Zapping or single fares
Best when you walk much of the day and take a few rides across different periods. Keep enough balance for the return.
€7.25 Carris and Metro day ticket
Best when buses, trams and metro matter but paid attractions do not. It runs for 24 hours from first validation.
€11.40 Carris, Metro and CP day ticket
The official 2026 product includes the relevant urban CP lines. Compare it with separate fares for the exact day.
Direct attraction ticket
Best when securing a specific time matters more than bundling unrelated admissions.
Where to stay for a pass-heavy Lisbon plan
A central base protects the pass window because the clock keeps running when you sleep. It also makes collection easier if you need an Ask Me Lisboa desk before reserving Belém.
Baixa
Useful transport, easy orientation and a practical start for Belém, Alfama and airport movements. Check street noise.
Compare Baixa staysLower Chiado
Good for evenings and central movement. Verify the exact slope between the hotel and useful transport.
Compare Chiado staysBelém
Only choose it when the western monuments define the trip. Most old-center evenings will require a return ride.
Compare Belém staysChoose 24, 48 or 72 hours without inventing value
The longer cards lower the daily price, but they also ask you to concentrate more sightseeing into consecutive time. The 48-hour card costs €20 more than the 24-hour version. That second day must therefore produce more than €20 of additional admission and transport value. The 72-hour card costs €11 more than the 48-hour version, so day three has an easier theoretical threshold, but only if open, included places still match the trip.
One concentrated monument day
Best when Belém and a second substantial inclusion are confirmed. Activate before the first useful journey, not during an unproductive evening.
Two distinct paid days
Best when each day has at least one serious included anchor, transit between them and no closure conflict. Do not use day two to repeat free neighborhoods.
A museum-led first visit
Best for travelers who genuinely enjoy several included interiors and can use three consecutive days without turning the city into a checklist.
Start a small ledger before purchase. On the left, write only attractions you would pay to enter without the card. On the right, add ordinary transport for the route you would take anyway. Remove every closed place, uncertain slot and discount you may not use. Compare that honest total with the pass price. This prevents the common mistake of valuing twenty possible inclusions while planning time for only three.
Collection and activation deserve their own plan
Collection is not activation. The physical card is needed for the Belém reservation sequence, while first transport or attraction validation starts the consecutive validity window. That distinction creates a useful tactic: collect early enough to handle reservations, then activate at the first journey or admission that begins the concentrated plan. Confirm the seller's current rules at pickup, since operational details can change.
Arrival day is often a poor activation day. Baggage delays, hotel check-in and a late meal can consume the first hours without producing meaningful value. If the next morning contains the real monument route, pay separately for the airport ride when necessary and protect the full card window. The card should serve the itinerary; the itinerary should not be stretched to rescue the card.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Lisboa Card include airport transport?
Yes. The official card includes Lisbon public transport, including the metro. Airport inclusion is convenient, but the ordinary airport metro fare does not carry a special premium, so it should not decide the purchase alone.
Does the Lisboa Card skip lines?
Do not assume universal priority access. Belém Tower and Jerónimos currently require cardholder reservations after physical-card collection, and admission remains subject to capacity.
Is the 48-hour Lisboa Card better value?
It can be, but only if the second day contains additional open, included attractions you already wanted. Two consecutive days of mostly free neighborhoods do not become valuable because the price per day falls.
Should I use the card for Sintra?
The card includes relevant urban rail and offers some attraction discounts, but Sintra palaces are not broadly free. Timed palace planning should come before pass value. Use our Sintra or Cascais guide to choose the day first.
