Pass comparison 04 · Amsterdam

Best Amsterdam city pass in 2026: price the two exclusions first.

I amsterdam Total Experience is strongest for a museum-and-transit plan. Go City fits selected experiences and tours. Neither makes the Anne Frank House or Van Gogh Museum ticket disappear.

The direct answer

Choose I amsterdam for museums and transport; choose Go City for a selected experience list.

Buy I amsterdam Total Experience when the Rijksmuseum plus several other included museums, GVB transit and a canal cruise already fit the route. Choose Go City Essentials or Explorer when you want a small number of specific inclusions without turning every hour into a card window. Choose Go City All-Inclusive for a dense two- or three-day experience plan. Buy no pass when the Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum are the two paid priorities.

Most pass comparisons start with catalog size. Amsterdam demands the opposite order. The Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum are the immovable tickets for many first-time visitors, yet the official I amsterdam FAQ excludes both. Their direct cost and schedule must be removed from the pass fantasy before any savings claim is tested.

Trip Well Spent value grade

I amsterdam wins for the museum-and-mobility trip.

Flexibility18/20Durations run 24 to 120 hours, and activation is controlled by the traveler.
Attraction depth20/20More than 70 museums and attractions create real cultural breadth.
Rule clarity18/20GVB scope and timeslot rules are documented, but each museum still needs checking.

−2Airport and regional transport are not the same as included city-wide GVB service.
−1Some included locations still need a timeslot.

The exclusion rule

The official I amsterdam FAQ excludes both the Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum from its Total Experience and Explorer products. The current Go City catalog does not replace those admissions either. Book them directly before using any card to fill the rest of the trip.

Match the card to the trip shape

Rijksmuseum + more museums

I amsterdam Total Experience

Add the live admission values, a canal cruise and realistic GVB use. The 72-hour €115 product needs more than one major museum to work.

Rijksmuseum + two experiences

Go City Essentials

A useful comparison when three named choices fit the three-day route and you value a 30-day use window.

Selected tours and day trips

Go City Explorer

Strong when higher-value experiences already sit on the list and GVB transport is not the main value driver.

Anne Frank + Van Gogh

Direct tickets

Book both directly and keep the third day flexible. A card may still work for the remaining hours, but it should not be the starting purchase.

Three break-even tests

Test 01 · museum-heavy

Rijksmuseum, Rembrandt House, Stedelijk, cruise and transit

This is an I amsterdam-shaped trip. Add the current direct admissions plus a 72-hour GVB reference of €21.50 and the cruise you would otherwise buy. Then compare with the 72-hour card's €115 starting price.

Test 02 · selected experiences

Rijksmuseum, canal cruise and one high-value tour

Compare Go City Essentials or Explorer with direct tickets. The 30-day window means the route can remain relaxed; the value depends on choosing substantial inclusions rather than inexpensive fillers.

Test 03 · two famous museums

Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum and canal walking

Skip the pass. The official Anne Frank adult ticket is currently €16.50 including its booking fee, sold online for a specific time. Add the direct Van Gogh ticket, then spend the rest on the city you came to see.

The transport value is narrower than it sounds

I amsterdam Total Experience includes city-wide public transport operated by GVB: metro, tram, bus and ferry for the card duration. That does not automatically include the airport train or regional operators. A central Amsterdam itinerary may also need fewer rides than expected.

Timeslots still matter

The I amsterdam guidance says some museums require advance timeslots even when admission is included. Go City publishes separate reservation instructions for selected tours and experiences. A QR code is not a capacity override. Secure scarce direct tickets first, then reserve included locations in the geography you can actually reach.

Amsterdam city-card questions

Which card is best for most visitors?

I amsterdam Total Experience is the strongest broad comparison for museum-focused visitors who will use GVB transport and a cruise. Go City is more compelling for selected experiences or regional tours.

Does I amsterdam include the Van Gogh Museum?

No. The official FAQ says the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House are excluded from both Explorer and Total Experience.

Is Go City Amsterdam worth it?

It can be when its Rijksmuseum, cruise, experience or tour inclusions match the paid list you already planned. It does not replace separate Anne Frank House or Van Gogh Museum tickets.

Is the 72-hour card worth it?

The I amsterdam 72-hour product currently starts at €115. It needs a museum-heavy list plus transit, cruise or bike-rental value to beat direct tickets. Recalculate with your exact museums and available times.
