The direct answer
Stay downtown near Kawaramachi, Sanjo or Karasuma on a first trip.
It gives you restaurants and evening walks without a bus plan, plus access to trains and subways that spread the next day in every direction. Stay in Gion or Southern Higashiyama when waking inside old Kyoto is the point. Stay at Kyoto Station when two or more day trips, a short stop or heavy luggage make rail logistics more valuable than atmosphere.

What should your Kyoto base do best?
Downtown Kyoto
The all-round first-trip answer: dining, river walks and multiple rail/subway options without making every evening a transport problem.

The five areas, graded honestly
Best first-trip base
Downtown Kyoto
Shijo-Kawaramachi, Sanjo and Karasuma make the city usable at both ends of the day.
Downtown is not the Kyoto of temple posters, and that is its strength. You can eat late, walk the river, reach Gion on foot and use subway, Hankyu or Keihan options depending on the day. A central stay reduces reliance on crowded buses and makes an unplanned evening easy.
Best atmosphere
Gion & Southern Higashiyama
Old lanes before breakfast, high room rates after dark.
Staying here buys the quiet hours around lanes and temples that are crowded by day. The tradeoff is a narrower range of casual late dining, more expensive small properties and less direct access to the city’s western side.
Best for rail logistics
Kyoto Station
The smartest choice for the trip built around trains, not the default city center.
The station area excels at arrivals, departures, luggage and rail-heavy itineraries. It is especially strong for families and short stays. But most evenings feel like being near a transport hub because that is exactly where you are.
Best quiet east-side stay
Northern Higashiyama
Calm mornings and a slower mood, with a real dining tradeoff.
This is for repeat visitors, walkers and travelers who actively value calm. It gives you a head start on the Philosopher’s Path side of town but makes western and southern days longer. Check the walk to the nearest useful rail or subway stop before falling for the garden photos.
Beautiful add-on, weak first base
Arashiyama
Wonderful for one special night; inconvenient for a five-day first visit.
Arashiyama is most appealing after day visitors leave and before they return. That makes a ryokan night memorable, but using it as the only base turns every eastern or southern day into a commute. Treat it as a one-night flourish, not the default.
The five-minute check before you book
- Map the hotel to the nearest train or subway, not only the nearest bus stop.
- Count how many itinerary days start east, west, south or outside Kyoto.
- Check casual dinner options after your likely return time.
- Confirm room size and bedding configuration, especially for families.
- Look for luggage forwarding or storage if arrival and checkout days are busy.
Three booking traps
“Near Kyoto Station” can mean the wrong side for your train. “Gion” can cover properties well outside the most walkable core. “Traditional room” may describe style, not a full ryokan meal-and-service experience.

Kyoto stay questions
Is Downtown or Gion better?
Downtown for first-trip convenience, food and transport. Gion for atmosphere and early/late access to the eastern historic areas.
Should I stay at Kyoto Station?
Yes when day trips, luggage or a short stop dominate. Otherwise downtown gives most first-timers a better evening experience.
Is it worth splitting hotels in Kyoto?
Usually not for a five-day first trip. Split only for a specific ryokan or Arashiyama night that is itself part of the experience.
Which area avoids buses best?
Downtown near useful rail and subway connections gives the broadest ability to combine trains, subways and walking rather than relying on one bus corridor.

Research note: The area framework was checked against current search leaders and Kyoto City’s official accommodation and transport guidance, which recommends combining trains, subways and buses. Re-check taxes, transit products and property details for your dates.
